Why we built it
SE Web, the Software Engineering Online Meeting and Learning Platform, was built as a team project at KMITL. We wanted to encourage learning and teamwork in software engineering by giving teachers and students one place to meet, share work and collaborate, without switching between many different apps.
The problem
Online classes often need several tools at once: one for video calls, another for homework, and another for announcements and files. This makes it hard for students to keep track of their courses, and hard for teachers to manage them.
The idea
SE Web brings everything into one web platform. Students and teachers can join live meeting rooms, see which rooms are free, submit and grade homework, and manage their profiles, all in the same place.
Key features
Meeting rooms
- Create and manage virtual meeting rooms.
- Real-time video calls.
- Room owners can customise the room name and description.
- A personal real-time canvas, plus shared whiteboards for brainstorming together.
Room availability
- Check which rooms are available in real time.
- Join your preferred room straight away.
Meeting controls
- Microphone, camera and hand-raise controls.
- Choose your own input and output audio and video devices.
Courses and homework
- Manage multiple courses, announcements and resources in one view.
- Upload and submit homework, with file management for students and teachers.
- Grading for teachers.
Accounts and profiles
- Secure login for students and teachers.
- Role-based access, so teachers and students see the right tools.
- Customise your profile with personal information.
How it works
- FastAPI (Python) server handles user authentication and the app's data.
- ZODB database stores website data and user information.
- WebSocket keeps meetings and room status updated in real time.
- WebRTC powers the live video calls.
- The front end is built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Impact
- One place for learning - meetings, homework and course resources live together.
- Real-time collaboration - live video and shared whiteboards make group work easier online.
- Built for both sides - teachers manage courses and grading, and students join, submit and collaborate.
