Why we built it
AI Music Practice Tools was built in a team of five at the Do You Have The GUTS? (DYHTG) Hackathon 2024, for the challenge set by guitarguitar, the UK's largest independent guitar retailer. The challenge was to create something that helps musicians practise and stay inspired.
The problem
Practice can quickly become repetitive. Musicians often play the same songs again and again, or spend a long time searching for songs and chords that match their level and taste. This makes it easy to lose motivation.
The idea
We built a web app that uses AI to give each musician fresh, personal practice material. You tell it what you like, how good you are and how you feel, and it suggests songs and chord progressions made for you.

Key features
AI Song Matcher
- Song suggestions based on your genre, skill level and mood.
- Custom suggestions for any instrument.
- Adapts to your musical taste and practice goals.
- Each song is tagged Easy, Intermediate or Hard.

AI Chord Matcher
- Custom chord progressions for different genres and moods.
- Difficulty levels that match your skill.
- Era-specific progressions for different musical styles.
- Works with multiple instruments and voicings.

Chord diagrams
- Open any progression to see a diagram for every chord, so you can start playing straight away.

How it works
- React front end for the practice tools.
- Express and Node.js back end that connects all the services.
- OpenAI creates the song suggestions and chord progressions.
- YouTube, Chordify and Scales-chords supply songs, chords and chord diagrams.
Impact
- Practice stays fresh - every session can bring new songs and progressions.
- Made for your level - beginners and experienced players both get material that fits them.
- Award-winning - won 2nd place in the guitarguitar challenge.
